La comunicazione è un processo che consiste nella trasmissione di un'informazione, attraverso lo scambio di un messaggio composto, secondo le regole di un determinato codice. L’uomo è dunque un “essere comunicativo”: per comprenderlo pienamente bisogna analizzare tutti i suoi aspetti espressivi: “verbali”, riferiti all'uso consapevole del linguaggio, sia scritto che orale; “para-verbali”, riferiti al tono, al volume e al ritmo della voce, alle pause ed altre espressioni sonore (come lo schiarirsi la voce); “non verbali”, riferiti proprio ai contesti privi di suoni e parole, quali le espressioni facciali, i gesti e le posture.
