The book publishing industry is going through a period of profound and turbulent change brought about in part by the digital revolution. What is the role of the book in an age preoccupied with computers and the internet? How has the book publishing industry been transformed by the economic and technological upheavals of recent years, and how is it likely to change in the future? This is the first major study of the book publishing industry in Britain and the United States for more than two decades. Thompson focuses on academic and higher education publishing and analyses the evolution of these sectors from 1980 to the present. He shows that each sector is characterized by its own distinctive ‘logic’ or dynamic of change, and that by reconstructing this logic we can understand the problems, challenges and opportunities faced by publishing firms today. He also shows that the digital revolution has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on the book publishing business, although the real impact of this revolution has little to do with the ebook scenarios imagined by many commentators. Books in the Digital Age will become a standard work on the publishing industry at the beginning of the 21st century. It will be of great interest to students taking courses in the sociology of culture, media and cultural studies, and publishing. It will also be of great value to professionals in the publishing industry, educators and policy makers, and to anyone interested in books and their future.

William Gibson, author of the extraordinary multiaward-winning novel Neuromancer, has written his most brilliant and thrilling work to date . . .The Mona Lisa Overdrive. Enter Gibson's unique world--lyric and mechanical, erotic and violent, sobering and exciting--where multinational corporations and high tech outlaws vie for power, traveling into the computer-generated universe known as cyberspace. Into this world comes Mona, a young girl with a murky past and an uncertain future whose life is on a collision course with internationally famous Sense/Net star Angie Mitchell. Since childhood, Angie has been able to tap into cyberspace without a computer. Now, from inside cyberspace, a kidnapping plot is masterminded by a phantom entity who has plans for Mona, Angie, and all humanity, plans that cannot be controlled . . . or even known. And behind the intrigue lurks the shadowy Yazuka, the powerful Japanese underworld, whose leaders ruthlessly manipulate people and events to suit their own purposes . . . or so they think.

Real-time or applied digital signal processing courses are offered as follow-ups to conventional or theory-oriented digital signal processing courses in many engineering programs for the purpose of teaching students the technical know-how for putting signal processing algorithms or theory into practical use. These courses normally involve access to a teaching laboratory that is equipped with hardware boards, in particular DSP boards, together with their supporting software. A number of textbooks have been written discussing how to achieve real-time implementation on these hardware boards. This book discusses how smartphones can be used as hardware boards for real-time implementation of signal processing algorithms as an alternative to the hardware boards that are currently being used in signal processing teaching laboratories. The fact that mobile devices, in particular smartphones, have now become powerful processing platforms has led to the development of this book, thus enabling students to use their own smartphones to run signal processing algorithms in real-time considering that these days nearly all students possess smartphones. Changing the hardware platforms that are currently used in applied or real-time signal processing courses to smartphones creates a truly mobile laboratory experience or environment for students. In addition, it relieves the cost burden associated with using a dedicated signal processing board noting that the software development tools for smartphones are free of charge and are well-developed. This book is written in such a way that it can be used as a textbook for applied or real time digital signal processing courses offered at many universities. Ten lab experiments that are commonly encountered in such courses are covered in the book. This book is written primarily for those who are already familiar with signal processing concepts and are interested in their real-time and practical aspects. Similar to existing real-time courses, knowledge of C programming is assumed. This book can also be used as a self-study guide for those who wish to become familiar with signal processing app development on either Android or iPhone smartphones.
